Short Biography

 

1940 Captain, fights in Flandres with his tank squadron. Is sent to Colonel de Gaulle's HQ. Made Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur à titre exceptionnel. After the Armistice, ask for leave of absence. Create and manage the 'Ecole Nationale des Cadres d'Uriage (4.000 students in two years).
July 1942 Go to Vabre for first contact.
December 15, 1942 Revoqued by Vichy government. The Uriage school is closed.
1943
Enters clandestine world. Creates the "Flying Teams" for civic instruction in the maquis with ex-team from Uriage. Spring 1943 : Goes to Alger and meets General de Gaulle. Comes back to France in a submarine via Barcelone. At Castelnaudary, is picked up by Guy de Rouville. Plans the future for D Day. Goes to Paris.
1943-1944
In contact with the Résistance. Meets Chaban-Delmas, Bourgès-Maunoury, Lorrain Cruse...
June 1944
Arrives at Vabre. Uses false identity : Monsieur Bonifas de Vabre. Military identity : Commandant Hugues, in charge of Zone A (South of Tarn) with the help of Charles d'Aragon.
August 20-22, 1944
Commands the battle of the train of Mazamet. Liberates Castres.
Early September 1944
Creates the Franc Bayard Corpse, later  the 12th Dragons (with the 240 volunteers of Vabre).
October 1944 - May 1945
War in the East, at Autun, joins with First Army in the Vosges. Crosses the river Rhin in the spring, lake of de Constance, Armistice, occupation. Receives the Rosette of the Légion d'Honneur from General de Lattre de Tassigny.
July 14, 1945
Marches under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris with his volunteers. Made General and Commandeur of the Légion d' Honneur, Director of the Youth Formation Bureau in Algeria, the Director of the Social Action Bureau of the army.
1964
Speech at Vabre for the 20th anniversary of the maquis.
March 13, 1968
Dies at the Military Hospital of the Val de Grâce in Paris.
